When I was in Wyoming, I was talking to a rancher, and made note that they put up a lot of hay. He told me, "Yeah, we break our backs 3 months a year, putting up hay, so we can break our backs the other 9 months, putting it out." Doesn't sound like a lot of fun to me! I have all I want putting up 1200 bales a year.

The ranch I trap on is 38 sections and the only area they can grow any hay is along the small creeks that they flood irrigate with. I think it takes 8 to 10 times the amount of land out here to accomplish the same back east and south. There are some areas of the state that take over 25 acres per cow/calf unit. Figuring in the ever changing harsh weather and how arid it is here. The rancher works probably 4 times hard for the same cow/calf unit as anywhere else. As bad as it is out here at times. The cowboys I know would not live anywhere else.

Where I saw them growing hay, there was irrigation systems, supplied by 671 Detroit diesels and angle head pumps. From what I understand, the Ogglala aquafier is going dry. Back way back when, the cowmen, in their infinite wisdom, signed over a bunch of the water rights to South Dakota, to try to keep the farmers out. And they have been trying to get them back ever since. About working to take care of cows, I don't know. I talked to a cow man south of Ten Sleep, that had turned out 60 heifers on several sections of land, and hadn't even been out to check on them for 6 months! People here overgraze, and end up having to work the cows, penning and moving them, to keep them up. This also requires a lot of feeding. Up there, people don't overgraze, and rely on nature and hay. Of course, you only get about 6 inches of rain a year, so the land is easily damaged. Here, we get a minimum of 60" a year, and I remember one record year, we had over 120"!

I've done my share. My dad and I put up hay until he was 60 and he said enough was enough. So the next year he bought a Harley and never touched another bail.

I was born with azma and beleive to this day that working out in those hay fields helped me build up my lungs.
