It occured to me on the forums the other day  that camping is camping no matter what, but I think that there are some differences across the U.S. and  World Wide that we might like to hear about.

It is not uncommon for people in Louisiana to build small camp houses on  Deer leases and lakes to hunt and fish or do both. It's also not uncommon to get together with friends and build a camp house or lodge on a lake or lease that can be shared by each other. I think that it's getting rare down here for people to actually camp out under the stars with no Camper or camp house. Camping is an event down here, it usually includes the whole family weather it is hunting season or just 4-wheeler riding in the summer time.  Camp cooking can be anything from boiled crawfish or blue crabs to cooking a pig in the ground or a small hog fillet on a BBQ.

The same thing happens up here in maine to a degree..if you can get a lease. Harder now than it use to be. Some of the camps are currently being sold at high prices...but the leases may expire at any moment......and you could lose the camp. Oh, you'll get the chance to move it.....but not worth buying one unless lease is transferred and runs for at least ten to twenty years. Lumber companies sell vast tracks all the time. One day your all set the next some flatlander just bought the parcel and you have to move the camp or burn it.

I hear that. I'm looking for a new lease right now. I could hunt plenty of public land down here, but I wouldn't leave my traps out there.

I am ever so blessed that Wyoming has the amount of public land that it does. The area that I bait bear in has over 800 square miles with some road access. I went up this afternoon to check my cameras and put out some bait and saw one of the largest mule deer I've ever seen. He was standing in some dense timber about 30 yards off the logging road. I would have to guess that he was very close to 30" wide. By the look of the bases I don't know if my fingers would touch around the base. That is not my hunting area this year , but I'm always thrilled to see such a magnificent animal living on public land.

We have large areas of public land here as well..but as wy said...i wouldn't leave anything out there. Never know when old Johnny Sneakum might be watching or lurking around.

Back when I trapped in High School, it was pretty common place for your traps to get stolen and your sets disturbed.  So I used to go through elaborate measures to conceal everything. It made me a better trapper in some reguards. But I still lost traps and catches here and there.

Leasing only solves part of the problem, controlling access is just hard.

It's all bullcrap. When I was a kid there was no such thing as a lease. All the timber company land was free access and I lived way back in the woods. About 8 miles from the closest small town and two miles off the 2 lane highway down a little dirt road. Man I wish that was still the way it was. I could tote around my 410 and walk as far as I could and rabbit hunt all day.  My step father still lives there and when I go out there to vist, I think about walking some of my old trails and looking around,  but it's all leased up by people that don't even know what's out there. Besides the scenery has changed several times with the timber cutting and new roads, etc. I think that leases would work if you could lease for a 20 years at a time, but down here it's year to year and you have to keep moving.

By the way I just lost my lease! Time to leave my hog heards and start with some new ones.:X

What I like about northern Maine is hundreds of miles of woods with hardly a no trespassing sign in sight. Most people could care less if you hunt on their land.

With Wyoming the lowest populated state in the lower 48. There is lots of room for everyone. And yes there are lots of Mr "POSTED" up here too.

I have 1000 acres in vernon parished leased. We have had it for 20+ years now it has been passed down from my dad to a family friend now I am in charge of it. I have only seen a little hog sign I have 9 cameras out 21 feeders and food plots and never got 1 picture of a hog. But if you like to deer or duck hunt its the place to do it.
