This trap belonged to my father-in-law. He is deceased now and I was wondering if y'all could identify it. I trap wild boar as y'all know, but have just begun getting interested in trapping other animals. "Thanks to your posts." I took several pictures of it on an old white towel so it would stand out better. Tell me about how old it is and what kind of trap it is etc. The best answer will get some trapping scents. This one will run for two weeks.

| Since you didn't measure the width of the jaws I can't be for sure. I would say it is a Victor or Victor-Onedia #1. Looking at the chain (if that is the original chain) I would guess that trap to be about 60 years old. It appears to be a very common one and they are not worth a whole lot maybe $3.00 to $ 4.00. I still use traps that are older than that. As long as the spring is still strong. They are wonderful on muskrats. If the jaw spread is 3 1/2"=#0, 4"=#1, 4 3/4"=#1 1/2, 5 1/2"=#2. If you can read anything on the pan that would help too.

| There is one interesting thing about the first picture. The dog jaw or the jaw on the left of the picture , has something on the jaw next to the spring that I can't make out what it is. If you get a chance look and let me know.

Here is the picture of the side of the jaws. Wyohunter, you should recognize the background! It's the Skull you sent me. The pan is 2" the jaws measure 3-1/4" inside when set.

| It would be a #O, and after looking at some of my antique traps, I believe that is a forge mark on the jaws. I'm glad you enjoy the antelope head.

Researching the history of a company or a trap inventor is tough. Unlike the Onieda folks, most companies came and went in almost anonimity.
It is tough enough to get the complete model list put together, let alone the small details of what happened behind the scenes.
But the trap you have pictured is a Victor #1 longspring .
back then they had the cast jaws, and cast j hooks where the chain attatches to the swivel. the V cut into the trap pan as a trademark and trappers would also wire bait to the trap pan using the cut out V ..
Made by Victor Ltd.from 1904-1917 before changing the design of the cast jaws and j hook to cut jaws , the present day Victor # 1 longspring trap also has much stronger chain and is twin looped instead of the figure 8 style that you have pictured and has been well modifyed over the years along with the rest of the trap , the forge mark on the jaws that Scott mentioned is actully just steel from the molding process of the cast jaws not a identification mark .
Intended to catch fisher, fox, marten, mink, muskrat, nutria, opossum, raccoon, and skunk the #1 long spring trap has been made for over 100 years and is still made this day. Although this trap isnt worth very much ($2.00 -$4.00) i still use the many i have on the muskrat line in a pinch but i actually dislike the trap as with muskrats twisting and turning they tend to wring off there leg if they dont drown ...This is why I like the #1 Victor longspring STOPLOSS trap.
Buy the way Victor still makes traps to this day and are called Oneida Victor Inc. Ltd. and are located at P.O.Box 32398 Euclid, OH 44132 but there traps are manufactured in Lititz, PA but back in the day when this trap was made they were manufactured in Oneida, NY.
Today Oneida Victor Inc. Ltd traps are owned and Operated by Richard Butera also the owner of BMI traps (Butera Manufacturing Inc.) and can be reached at the follwing number Phone- 216-761-9010 Fax - 216-761-8809 if you do happen to call ask for Rich and tell him Dan Tanner said hello!
Below is one pictured that is complete, someone cut the chain on yours and discarded the chain ring....
