It looks like there are two tapered stabalizers and a crank handle to reel with. Before I do any research, I would guess that this is something that is jammed into a barrel or even set on a rail and used as a hand crank to wind string. Maybe an old depth finder. I hope your not laughing your butt off at my first guess Wyohunter

Can you tell me if the top winds the string, or remove the string and take a picture of it?

As soon as the wife tells me where the camera is (she's at work) I'll take another picture. In the mean time, the overall length is 16" the top knob is 2" the center spade is 9". The center spade swivels, the other two don't. The one next to the center spade is flat and tapered too.

| If you hold the center spade you can use the top knob and wind up the string.

| My vote is that it is a kite real......... saw it in an old 1800's pic of kids flying kites.....google kite reel.

| Will try to pinpoint the site agian...... also occurred to me that it looked alot like a gizmo spinners used for carding yarn.
