Boarmaster, that is very good advice on moving slow and stopping every few feet and listening. I locate them 90% of the time by hearing them first.
Stalking hogs with a stick and string has become an obsession of mine. Surprisingly they are fairly easy to stalk when they are on the move. They can be very vocal and are not very stealthy when they are moving between feeding areas. The sows are the ones you have to outsmart. There is always at least one sow on alert. She will dictate the pace of the movement.
Many times I have had hogs within 3 feet of my boots. I try to flank them on thier downwind side and I always try to stop by a tree or some brush to break up my outline. Sometimes they will stop and stare at you trying to figure out what is out of place. If an older sow feels something is not right she will imediately circle downwind to check it out. Once she gets your scent it's all over.

I have learned that checking blow-downs is a good place to look. Hogs like to bed down in the tops. Yesterday i ran a good size boar out of one on the side of a slew, but couldnt get a shot due to another guy being where he wasnt supposed to be . That boar was huge, black as coal and he was moving. He got into that thick river cane and was gone . I'm at work today, had to drive up but plan to go back tomorrow ----- weather permitting . Calling for our second round of snow today. Since i'm at work , no pics till i get home tomorrow evening.Last edited on Sat Jan 19th, 2008 02:13 pm by firedawg226

That is really the truth. I have had them stare at me from just a few yards and as long as you don't move your alright, but they will circle when they are on to you.
