A couple of years ago, a man told me to dig a deep narrow post hole, and fill it with corn. He claimed the hogs would not leave the corn, and they could not get it out. So, one night after leaving my stand, I dug a 4 foot hole, as narrow as possible, and filled it with about 75# of corn. I could not wait until the next morning. As it began getting light, something just didn't look right. I kept watching the spot, waiting for the hogs to come out. Finally, it was light enough to see. HA! It looked like someone had been in there with a D9. DIrt and sand was piled up, so that it looked like dunes on the beach. Later inspection showed that not one kernal of corn was left. Yeah, they didn't leave as long as corn was there, but it sure didn't take them long to excavate it out. If I do this again, it will only be in tight soil.

If the ground is really soft, you can use more more than one hole and layer it with dirt, corn, and rice bran. The rice bran will keep them busy. I really like my barrel method the best though.

Barrel method:
Old rain or food barrels work the best. Just fill it with your favorite bait, cut a 1-1/4 inch hole on the side as close to the bottom as you can. If you can; re-enforce it with a metal plate. This method produces competition, only one hog can eat at a time, which makes other hogs sneak in during daylight hours to get some food before the night crowd comes in.

I picked up one of those barrels and I'm going to see what a bear will do to it.

The post holes work well and keep them busy with their heads down, great for an ambush shot.

| For bear I would make the hole bigger and as high up as possible on the barrel to help keep the coons out of it.

| I'm lucky I haven't had and coon come into my bait sites. There's not hardly any coon in the higher elevations.
