| A friend of mine says he wrapped a tree with sisal rope, then soaked it with used motor oil. Claims the hogs love it, and come to rub on it all the time.

| You can also use diesel fuel or creosote on the rope, will draw them in. I'll take some pics this wednesday of rail road ties rubbed slick by hogs.

Some people use burlap sacks too. I like my old telephone poles though.

They rub to scratch themselves, but if they can find something that burns thier skin, and provides a long lasting bug repelent; they will be on it like blow flies on fresh poop! Here is my secret recipe that I can't believe I'm sharing
Here's the secret to success!
Go to the pet isle at walmart and buy a bottle of sulfodene, Mix it with a quart of cheap motor oil, that is the best rub formula you will ever find anywhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like my telephone poles that are pre soaked with creostote, but they work even better, with the loud smell of the sulfodene; it also helps leach the creosote out of the wood. The hogs will be your best friends for life, at least until you put an arrow in them

I've been trapping our lease the past few days and the hogs are WEARING out the creosoted powerline poles. I think I'm going to try and hang a few hog snares on them and see if that'll snag a few.
I save all my oil from the powerstroke. They like it alot better than used oil from a gasoline engine. Used oil from a diesel has a high sulfer content.
I have a few bomb holes. Find a nice shady spot between two trees that has real sandy soil and dig a hole about 2 feet in dia x 6 inches deep. Tie you a rope between the two trees as high as you can reach and hang a gallon jug of used diesel oil directly over the hole. Poke a very small hole in the jug so it will allow a drop of oil to fall into the hole about every 10-15seconds.Ifyou've got hogs in the area it won't take long and the hole will be 8 feet dia and 3 feet deep. Hence the term bomb hole. The oil will soak into the sand and last a long time. I fill the jugs about every two months.
I'm going to try adding some sulfodene to my next batch. I bet that would be like iceing on a cake to the hogs.

| I wish i took pics but last trip to bond swamp the power line poles were rooted out 2 or3 foot deep around the base of each pole. The hogs were rubbing the crap out of the poles, and in the process created a cool spot to waller in during the summer.....

| We use 1/2 dirty motor oil with 1/2 diesel fuel. Wrap an old terry towel around a post (nail it in place) and pour it on it.

I have heard several people talk about the Black Gold, but I have never tried it. I have not heard any bad things about it, though. Must be something to it. How many feet of rope does it take, to do what you say? What size rope, and how tall of a rope column do you put on a tree?

| the rope needs to be old and as big as you can find and as for the column i just use a 3 1/2 foot 2x4 and then drill it to the tree so the rope holds better

The fellow that told me about this, said he had used 1" rope, and wrapped it around and around a tree, making a rope column about 2 foot high, that began about a foot off the ground. The tree was about as big around as a telephone pole, and he had about 75 foot of old manila rope. he said he just nailed it to the tree and then soaked it in used motor oil after wrapping. He said that a couple times a year, he pours more oil on it. He also said that the rope was getting worn on one side of the tree.
I have seen where hogs like to rub against telephone poles, that are heavy with creosote. I think it kills the fleas and lice.

Just remember what goes on the hog will go into the hog... Also what goes on the hog goes into the water also....

| A friend of mine, that use to make and sell hog attractants and baits, told me that Black Gold was mainly stock grade molassas syrup. I cannot verify this, but I imagine that any liquid bait of this type, probably uses molassas, but has other ingredients mixed in it. Last edited on Mon Jul 6th, 2009 09:48 am by Chick
