| I was up at the lease, and saw hogs out during the middle of the day, TWICE. Also, once again, I found that they do not seem to pay any attention to a 4 wheeler that is idleing in their direction, if they have their heads down and eating corn. One time, I got to within 25 yards of them like this. Last edited on Sun Apr 13th, 2008 12:08 am by Chick

They were real tame to my little ford ranger as well on my old lease.

| Around Freestone Co. its pretty common to see hogs out in the day light. Mostly in the morning before 11:00 am or after 4:00 pm (feeding). If the weather is hot they don't come out in the daytime as much, but in cool weather I have been feeding cows and seen them moving during the middle of the day. I don't know why they would feed and move like that here and not other places, except the areas where I have seen this are very over populated with hogs. So, I'm thinking competition for food. One place I trap on, is 135 acs. I never check my traps before about 10am because I'm afraid of running them away from the traps. On this place I have four traps. Two pen traps and two box traps. I baited the trap areas for a week or so before I put the traps in. After building the 1st pen trap I baited it, (tied open) for about a week then set it. Caught three sows on the second day. (avg wt 120lbs) Three days later caught twelve yearlings averaging about 80lbs. The other we baited for about 10 days before building the trap. Then built the trap and baited it open one night, all the bait was gone next morning. We set it and had five sows and about twelve or fifteen piglets the next morning. (one 218 lbs the others avg 140 lbs). Over a period of about six weeks I caught 81 hogs out of that place, about half of them piglets. I'm telling you all this to give you an idea of the population of hogs on that place and the surrounding area. Does the places ya'll hunt and trap have populations similar to this area or is this just an exception?

Welcome to the forums. That's high compared to my area, but they are trapped by a few others as well as myself. I think it all depends on the interest and pressure they have on them. That is alot of meat though

Yes it is, I made all my friends happy as well as a few new ones. I have a holding facility about twenty miles from here that buys hogs for the packers. But, even selling the bigger ones there I don't think I paid for the gas and corn it took to catch them. My traps have been closed about three weeks, letting the hogs settle down on the place. I set them again yesterday, I'll let you know what happens.

| When they are busy eating there is not too much that will disturb them. Thats another reason why you should bury your bait.

| What had these hogs bothered was the traffic in and out, checking the traps. We had got to the point we were not seeing as much sign or catching hogs but every four or five days. Since I opened them up last Saturday we've caught 32 hogs and piglets, 1@ 177lbs, 6@ 100 to 140lbs, most were 40-60lbs.
