Yu cannot believe how much I envy you. I wish I could get up there and trap with you. Yesterday, when I came to work, I was thinking how much Candi had improved, and that I might get up there for a few days. Then last night, at her 8pm meds, nausea set in for about 4.5 hours, with dry heaves. They about had to overdose her on phenergan, zofran and morphine, to get the heaves stopped. I think her anti-rejection medication level is too high. Anyway, the dry heaves are stopped, but the nausea is still there somewhat. I plan to have her blood drawn and checked, to get the the medicine adjusted, and get her better. If we can ever get the stomach stuff taken care of, she has smooth sailing ahead. As soon as that happens, I will be up there. Possibly on a weekend, when her mother can take care of her.

wyo, I meant to say that is a beautiful coyote. Like Chick said, ours have a heavy influence of red wolves from years ago. The wolves are gone but thier genes are still present.

Chick, it has been a total pain trapping this past week. With the rains every other day just trying to keep the washed out sets working has been a job in itself. We had a marble sized hail storm last night and then a real turd floater. Almost every trap was sprung today. I not going to reset them until it drys up a little.

It's worth it tho just to know I'm helping out our deer, hogs and turkeys. Saw eight turkeys today running down the road by the big dead tree.

The picture of the 2 coyotes, looks like where you turn off the road to go to my hog trap with the guillotine door.

Hey! You up? I'm calling.

Yeah, we had 50 cent piece size hail, last Tuesday.

If you get a hankerin' to come trap Tx and don't mind dishing out the $350.00 for a non resident license give me a holler and I'll show you more land then we can both trap.

Brucet, If I'm setting for only cats my prefered trap is a #3 Bridger. I like the larger jaw spread for cats. My yote traps are mostly #2 Bridgers with a mix of 1.75 victors.

Chick, as of today the predator population on our lease is down 81 coyotes and 9 bobcats. The cat hot spot has been at the intersection where I turn to go to my creek stand. The pic with the coyote double is the spot. I had two cat doubles in the same spot as those yotes. You oughtta see the catch circles at those two traps. It looks like a UFO landed there.
If you don't mind me asking what kind of sets are you catching the bobcats in?I always wanted to trap a bobcat.:D

Nutoy told me, and I was amazed. I'll let him tell you. I would never have tried that, but then, I do not have near the trapping experience of Nutoy either.

brucet, I use a mix of dirtholes, flat sets and cubby sets. I like to put lots of guiding and blocking with a high backing in an attempt to keep the yotes out of my cats sets. I also use visual attractors over the cat sets. I've found that old CD's work real well. I break them in half and drill a hole in them and hang a couple of halfs a few feet over the set with fishing line to get the cats attention. The slightest breeze will make them spin slowly. Red christmas tree tinsel works too. Once you get a cats attention you've pretty much got him if you have a decent lure. I've been having real good results with Dobbins Puuurfect.

The use of the dirt hole set, for cats, is what amazes me. I never thought of it for anything but canines. The CD's that Nutoy are useing, is something I never thought of, but would be perfect. I use to like duck wings, hanging over the set. The white underside would blow around and get their attention, and hopefully, the smell of fresh meat, would not hurt either. Worked good for me. A friend of mine used pie tins and paper plates, hanging over the set. I normally tried to make this set, where an old log was at. Put a trap on either side of the log, with the wing hanging about 3 feet above. Also, I liked to find spots that wereon the side of a pasture or clear cut. The motion brought the cats in, and they would step up on the log to get to the wing. Of course, they were in double jeopardy, as there was a trap on either side of the log when they stepped up, or down. Cat or dog urine on the side of the log, erased any fear.

Just checked and the biggest traps allowed up here on dry land in northern Maine are 1 3/4 with their 5 1/4 inch jaw spread. We are only allowed to use traps with a jaw spread no bigger then 5 3/8.That outlaws anything #2 and bigger.

You know, all these rule's and law's can really put a damper on our fun. Bruce, have you heard why they only allow certain trap sizes? While i have trapped in the past i still consider myself a novice. Trapping for me was on family owned land with some little ole victor double springs and a few singles. We mainley caught coons and fox, and cauht alot of possums in live catch box traps. I did manage to catch a ground hog in a double set once, got a front leg in one trap and a rear in the other, man he was pissed off!!!!!

I've never understood it myself, do these people just sit around and come up with dumb rules to follow?  Lets say I caught a beaver and wanted to use the carcass for bait. Bait can not exceed 5lbs or you have to cover it and if you don't cover it then you have to set your traps back a certain distance. It does get very frustrating.

I would think the no exposed bait is because of Raptors. I always place my bait piles in heavy thickets. We are starting to get a few resident bald eagles and I surely don't want to snag one.

We still have reasonable trapping regulations here but I imagine that will change in the coming years as other states implement more stringent regulations or worse yet, ban trapping altogether.

I have read other states regulations and I can relate to some of the regs but some of them are totally ridiculous. You almost need to have a law degree to interpret some of them. IMO that is the intent in some of those states. By making it difficult to interpret or understand the regulations it may discourage people from trapping.

The days of good ol common sense seem to be a thing of the past. Nothing is simple anymore. If it were we wouldn't need all those fat cats draining our tax dollars.
