:X Well, the politicians are at it again and so is big money a-holes. Oaky woods WMA is having part of it sold off to build a frigging home and golf estate. The bears at ow wma need all the land for food they can get. Scientists have collared and studied these bears, tracked them around their home range and none of it means squat. Once these homes are there the bears will be shot as aggressive whether they are or not, because somebody is gonna be pissed that their trash was turned over. Some of the bears have been hit by vehicles already, more homes = more traffic and so on.:X

OW  WMA is located in the poorest part of Georgia, the main job there is working at Frito Lay plant....  How can they justify removing hard timber and habitat for a bear population that is already struggling? And to what end, so some jackass can chase a ball around on pretty green grass?

Hunters have been hounding the govenor, maybe that will help but doubtful.:(:(

I hope i havent offended anyone about the golf comment, i certainley did not intend to, i'm just pissed off at the whole mess. The central Ga. bear population is struggling and this is gonna be the "death nail" in their coffin...:(:X

Not to sound sarcastic. Run for an office. My wife ran for State Representative. She didn't win but she did try. She can't run anymore because she holds a federal job. I'm working with my employer to see if they will support me ( give me time off) in running for office. It's the only way we can make a difference.

And one more thing we have got to quit electing the same SOB's in office. For the people out there that keep pushing those same buttons for the same people  and have no idea who they are voting for , you are not part of the solution , you are a huge part of the problem. Two words for the people that are too busy to stay informed. TERM LIMITS.  What are we saying as a society that we keep putting the same people in office that are so out of touch with reality and so ingrained in "business as usual" that they are ruining our country because all they listen to is the lobbyist and corporate America and that pertains to BOTH parties.

I'm Ok............... I feel better now.:D

Well,

The sad part is more people would probably vote for the golf course, and your right. The bear will be seen as a nuisance after its all said and done. The golfers will cry that they have been seeing bear around the golf course and are afraid to bring there kids out there etc, etc. The housing areas will cry about the same things. It's pure bull crap.

Thanks Boarmaster, Wyo and Brucie, i can say that Wyo, you are correct in your statements and as for running for office, i would love to. However, i am not sure how i could manage that and my job together. I am supposed to be here every third day, and there may be a conflict between the goverment i work for and the state body. I dont know if i could hold both positions and make it work. However you have given me an idea and that is nominate and support some one who is totally on the same page as the rest of us as far as preserving our enviorment, lands and hunting habitats.

I am saddened that the bears i regard so highly are in danger of mass slaughter, which is gonna happen sure as i'm sitting here. You guys know some of my feelings regarding the bears and the hunting regulations georgia has in place for them. the upside is that only 1% of the bears population are  kills by hunters here, so the population has a chance to spring back.  This is due to places like oaky woods wma where the bears have free range and are still protected for the most part.

one of the collared bears(male) was tracked down the river for 35 miles, then he did a u-turn and headed back to his home. This has been his pattern for a few years now, he has never bothered anyone nor posed a threat. Now with the new developments this may not be the case...

There are a multitude of other things you can do instead of running for office. Try and get a coalition of hunters and concerned citizens together to fight it. Find people to start writing letters to the newspapers. Contact all politicians and find there stance on this item and publish your findings on the net and newspapers. I bet there are already some pro-hunting conservation groups that are fighting it, maybe you could help one of them. Yes, it is a butt load of work and at times it will pay off.

already on it... one of the guys on my shift wife works for a local news station. after your post i got to thinking and talked to him and his wife.. she is getting with their political reporter and getting them to do a story on the plight of the central bear population and the non-committel govenor of our state.  The real pisser for me is that the gov. lived near oaky woods and hunted there as a child/teen. Why not support the drive to save it? Because he has been buying land up and selling it for a profit under the guise of a parent company. The politicians are so corrupt it is amazing. I firmly believe there is a special place in HELL for them and the child abusers out there!

This morning i got on a show (talk radio) known as " Oniel Outside" that is on am radio 750 out of atlanta, hosted by Oniel Williams. Got the chance to put it on the air about Oaky Woods.. I was surprised that Oniel had not heard about this and he said he was going to check into this himself. He also encouraged listeners to google the wma and jump on the bandwagon and help petition the state to purchase the land and save a valuable resource. I really hope this helps.

I dont champion many causes mainley because i feel that there is never enough information available. But this one is different because i see where and how this type of event is going to have a negative impact on the enviorment of the central ga. bear population. You guy's already know that i dont hunt bears and i only condem it when less than mature bears are harvested. I want to make sure that in years to come that all hunters, bear or other, have places like ow wma to hunt. I also want to make sure that non-hunters have the ability to watch animals in their enviorment and enjoy them.

I think you're on the right track. The more people get informed the better the chance is to make some changes. Make sure you hit the newspapers real hard, especially on the editors page.
