The Louisiana Black Bear makes it's den in hollowed out bald cypress trees. Do y'all have information or pictures of bear dens in your state?

They use tree cavities, under logs, rocks, banks, caves or culverts and shallow depressions. Dens are rarely reused.

why do bears rairly reuse a den? will others move into a den that was previously used by other bears?

The studies I read, the dens were more likely to be reused by a different bear than the original bear and even with that is was a very small percentage of reused dens. None of the studies gave a reason why they don't reuse them. Here's an interesting fact: you have better odds of winning the lottery than you do of getting attacked by a black bear.

I have some friends in Rabun county Ga. . They were building their house on a saddle between two mountains, nearly in the cloud cover. They had a bear make a bed in their family room under the stairs. After the house was complete the bear kept coming back and looking in through the six foot high glass panels wanting in. I guess he liked the warmth and the view from inside of the valley.

Yeah, i actually read the Foxfire books. My buddy that lives in clayton, his grandpappy was interviewed and quoted for that book, moonshining section. He had a uncle that got a bit on bee keeping.

I think that more folks should read those books. They contain alot of info that is getting lost on a younger generation. Its mostly heritage stuff, but usefull info that could get you out of a jam.

    Hey Wyo,

Got tags, just dont know about shooting bears.

I really liked those books. Talk about a window to the past. If you need any help/advice on bear hunting please ask away. I'm no expert, but I'll sure share everything I know.
