I am thinking of using my 30-30 for hunting black bear this fall. Is this a bad choice? I shoot 170 grain bullets. My shots should be no more than 50 yards and most likely around 30. If 30-30 won't do what would be a good choice in ammunition for a 30-06; I have a single shot Rosse that is brand new and never been fired.

I'd go with the 30-06 and use 220 round tipped bullets.Wait untill the bear is broad side and double lung him right behind the shoulder.

I killed a nice black bear with a 30-30, 170 grain at 7 yards. I think it is a wonderful gun in that situation.

I contacted remington, and they said at the ranges I stated that the 30-30 would do the job.
