Greetings All,

My wife & I will be moving out to some rural property soon, where we're renovating an old house.  There are a LOT of coyotes around there.  We've seen & heard hundreds over the last couple of years.  Found one dead on the road right in front of the house just last week.

My wife is a big-time cat lover, and she HATES coyotes, 'cause of their fondness for eating cats.  We also have chickens and geese that we need to defend.  I have several rifles that I could use just fine on the coyotes, including .223's, 7.62x39's, and my .30-30.  The problem is/was that my wife really can't stand much recoil or muzzle blast at all.  Even the .223 intimidates her to the point that she won't shoot it, but she really wanted to be able to pop a coyote if one comes around when I'm not there.

Since any shot she'd be taking at a coyote would be likely to be at pretty short range (probably 50 yards or less), I reasoned that a carbine shooting a fairly stout pistol round might be a good choice for a very gentle-to-shoot gun with reasonable power for a coyote at short range.  I got her a Hi-Point semiauto carbine in .40 S&W and fitted it with a red-dot scope.

Any thoughts on this setup?  Better ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Jim

If she is comfortable with it, that will work. The pistol caliber will generate more energy in the longer rifle barrel, than it would through a pistol, but I would not expect it to be overly effective at longer ranges. Have you done any targets with it yet? I would be interested to know how it does. My suggestion would have been an AR15 or Mini14. They don't have much recoil, but do have quite a muzzle blast. The Mini14 is not known for being overly accurate, but with handloads, mine will shoot 2" or better at 100 yards. My AR does much better than that. Let us know how it performs, and if she whacks a coyote, PLEEEEZZEE post us a picture.

Hi Chick,

Thanks for the response!

One of the guns I already had was a Mini-14, but my wife doesn't like it at all.  I figured a pistol round would be much gentler on her, and the Hi-Point in .40 looked like a good (and cheap) pick.  I was considering a .44 or .357 lever gun, but bought the Hi-Point kind of on impulse.

If I go after a coyote myself, I'll probably just grab the .30-30, as it's my most accurate rifle and a has great scope.

Like I said, I expect that any shots my wife takes will be at pretty short range.  I'm hoping the .40 will be just right.  I haven't done anything but a little plinking with it yet, and haven't sighted it in with the scope .

We're not actively hunting coyotes, but any that come in range are targets of opportunity!

Thanks again for your reply - We'll post pics if/when we get any.

Regards,

Jim

Hi kilowatt3 you ever think about a 22cal lr or a 22mag. No recoil at all real accurate . I dont think it will drop them right there but it will kill him. put a scope on it and your wife could crack off 5 to 10 rounds pretty quick......

I think the Mini 14 and AR would be too much noise for her, if she is already kind of scared. And yes, I think the .22 Mag would be an excellent choice.

Yeah. both of them are good guns. But, if you have a woman that is jumpy, they would probably be too much for her. I really like the 22-250!

At that range, a Ruger 10/22mag would be bad medicine for a coyote.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Interesting that you mentioned the .22 Mag - I just bought a Marlin .22 Mag bolt action.  I kinda wanted it anyway, but this was a good excuse for getting it! :D

I'll have the wife shoot both the .40 and the .22 Mag & let her decide which she prefers.  I'm thinking that a good heart shot with the .22 Mag should be pretty effective within the range she's likely to be shooting.

Nutoy - I have a Ruger 10/22, but it's a .22LR, not a Magnum.  Do they make it in .22 Mag?  I've never seen one, but it sounds like it'd be a really slick little rifle!

Thanks again for the reponses.

Regards,

Jim

Nutoy,

I was just about to post and ask you again about the Ruger 10/22 Mag, but figured I'd google it first, and Hot Damn! There it is!  On top of that, I see that it was introduced in 1999.  Can't believe I'd never seen or heard of it!  I'm a big fan of Rugers, and have a half-dozen or so of 'em, but I just somehow overlooked the 10/22 Mag.  Gotta have one!

Thanks for the heads-up!

Jim

I don't have one,, not that I wouldn't like to have one. I have a OLD beat up Marlin 22 mag bolt action that is a shoonuf tack driver. It will shoot one hole 10 shot groups at 75 yds alll day long. Even then, I'd still like to have a semi auto carbine.

I've talked to a couple folks that do have them and they love em.

I have a Remington 597 .22 WMR Semi-Auto with a bull barrel that I'll take on the stand for hogs before I'll take my .270 if the shots are 100yds  or less. They'll bury me with that little gun. Hard to beat that .22WMR round.
