I decided to head out this afternoon around 1:30 to do some calling out back behind the house.. My oldest daughter Becca 11 decided she would tag along so after finding some white clothes for her we headed out...
about 75 yards from the house as we are walking up the trail to where i want to call from which is 500 yards away i see a redfox take off into the woods he was about 250 up the trail and i didnt have a chance to get the gun up , anyway i decided to set up right there and maybe we could call him back, we sat there for 30 mins and he never showed anyway we headed further up the trail to where i wanted to call from .. after calling for about 20 mins i seen a redfox trying to sneak in to the caller through the woods and brush about 45 yards away i had my scope on him atleast 6 times in 2 minutes but it was really thick so i didnt shoot, anyway he vanished and never hit a clear spot... we continued to call and i tryed differnt calls in hopes of gaining his attention to get him back when i look over and see a barred owl come swooping in and landing in the tree right above my caller he was looking for the squeeeking but couldnt see anything , we watched the owl for about 3 minutes about 15 yards away from us before he flew off anyway i decided to see if i could get either of them back in sight and switched calls again, when i notice a redfox leaving the area he was there the hole time while our eyes were focused on the owl , the fox was on his way to thicker cover slowly walking through the brush when i put my crosshairs on him all i had a clear shot at was his head... so i let it rip ..he took off like a bat out of hell so i figured i missed him when i went over to where he was i seen blood not much at all just a few pin drops anyway as i looked around closer i found more and more and more before i knew it i was 400 yards away in knee deep snow tracking a fox that obviously wasnt hit well anyway I foolowed his tracks and blood till there wasnt anymore in hopes maybe i would find him..... i did learn a few things today
1.if the animal dont present a good shot let it walk, dont get a itchy trigger finger
2.dont take head shots on moving fox
3.Turkey calls work well for bringing in the fox in winter
4. adult rat in distress really appeals to the owls
and 5 just because you can not see them dosent mean they arent there.
anyway here is a pic my daughter took about 5 mins before shooting at the fox

Dan,
That is a sweet picture, I can see that on the cover of a magazine. Thanks for sharing the advice, I love coopererative education and just remember this the next time you don't succeed.
God made rivers and God made Lakes as you know we all make mistakes!
