Looks like you've found a good gun/shell combination. Theres a turkey in big trouble if it gets 40 yds or closer.
I shoot a 3 1/2" with a 2 1/4oz load of #4's and it looks just like that at 40 yds. The downside is my shoulder looks like a rare steak if I shoot it more than 2 or 3 times. The past 4 seasons I could have used a .410. I think my furtherest shot has been 8 yds.
Two years ago I had filled my tag and was calling for my bro-n-law. This was his third year of turkey hunting and he had yet to bag a bird. He already had 5 or 6 toms turn and run from him that week because he can't stand to be quiet when he has one coming in. These birds around here get very educated and will not stand for heavy calling after the first few days of the season. I knew where a good bird was hanging out that had gone silent after opening day. We walked in while it was still pitch black dark and sat side by side under a big oak tree. About 30 minutes before daybreak that tom let out one short gobble,,, and we were sitting right underneath him. Bro-n-law whispered for me to call, I whispered back NOoooo. Just as it was cracking daylight we heard him flex his wings above us and bro was about to go ballistic. A few minutes later he pitched from his roost and hit the ground about 50 yds in front of us. He started to walk away from us and I let out two very soft yelps. He immediatly blew up into full strut and started spitting and drumming. I was fixing to whisper for him to wait and he pulled the trigger. That gobbler hit the dirt and flopped a couple times. I looked at him and told him he was the luckest SOB I'd ever seen. He said why? I walked off the distance to the bird. It was 55 yds and he was shooting a 12 ga 870 with 2 3/4" #6's. That bird had 2 pellets right behind its eye and not another pellet anywhere. After me giving him a tongue lashing about taking a stupid shot we hi-fived each other and started the 3/4 mile walk back to the truck.
Last year I called him up another tom and he waited until it was 10 FEET from the end of the barrel before he shot. I ask him why he waited sooo long. He said he wasn't taking anymore tongue lashings like he got the year before. LOL
BTW, I went scouting this morning and heard three birds raising cane right at daylight. I'm pumped now. April 1st can't get here soon enough.

Our season opens march 25th and ive got a line on a bunch of birds. Last fall and a week or two back ive got a bunch of birds in one flock, 21. When spring gets here they will thin down and break-up into smaller groups, but stay in the same general area. I know of several flocks in the N.Ga. area that do the same routine, all with large numbers of birds.
Our limit here is three gobbler's a season. We can only hunt in the spring, there is no fall season and i dont understand that. Most americans only eat turkey at the holidays..... So unless i freeze a wild one in the spring, i cant have one in the winter. Spring is breeding season, so why not hunt them in the fall?

Gezzzz, a three bird limit. In most of the east tx counties that even have an open season on turkeys its spring only, one gobbler, shotgun only. I guess I should be thankful we even get to hunt them because it hasn't been that many years since they were re-introduced back into the area.
Central and west tx is a different story all together. Four bird limit. Spring and fall seasons. Many of those counties are either sex in the fall and gobblers only in the spring. The birds out there are Rios. IMO they are the stupidest of all the turkey species. At least the ones I've hunted were. You can HAMMER them with calls and the more you call the more they gobble. Thier nothing like the Easterns we have around here. As much fun as the Rios are to hunt, I enjoy the challange of trying to outsmart these Easterns. Thier season out west starts in mid March and I go out there almost ever year with a buddy of mine that has a big lease and we are the only ones that hunt the turkeys in the spring. Many times I could fill all four tags on the first morning but I always keep one tag for these local birds.

Good plan!!!! i wish we had a fall season. As with you guy's it's male only and three is the limit. Our DNR really works hard to ensure habitat for the bird's, food plots and such, and our population really shows. When hunting hog's, deer or anything you are gonna see birds in large numbers. We can use black powder, shotguns and bow's so we have some variety. No electronic callers allowed, box calls and mouth calls or slate's. We can use decoy's, however i use my calls and bring them in that way.
LOT'S OF FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wyo,
We dont have to get drawn for anything here..... We can even hunt gators if you spend the extra fifty bucks for the tag...

Mossberg, model 88 ? i think. I bought it from the same place you were chasing the wiesel. It's a pump, and i'm using a predator xx-full choke and shooting fiocchi 3" mag 12 gauge with #5 shot. I was very happy with that pattern. If you look at the other pic of my view that turkey head target is pretty small at forty yards so i have hit upon a very effective combination.
