You ever have those mornings when your eyes just pop open for no reason. This morning was one of those days. At 5:00am my feet hit the floor like I was late for something. After a late night of poker playing I had no idea why I couldn't sleep. I sat on the front porch steps sipping on a fresh cup of community coffee as the glow of a nearly full moon fitered through the tree tops reflecting off the slick surface of the lake. It was about then when I knew why I had that "feeling". After reloading my cup I fumbled through my sock drawer and finally found them,,, my crow and owl calls. I fired up the power stroke and headed out to one of my favorite listening spots and turned off the noisey diesel just as the horizon was getting that faint glow letting the world know a new day is coming. I love this time of the morning because time seems too stand still during this magical moment. I grabbed my coffee cup, opened the truck door and stepped out being very careful as I eased the door shut. Just as I put the coffee cup to my lips a owl hooted off in the distance. The hoot echoed several times as if it was answering itself when the thunder of a mature gobbler sounded off not 100 yds away. Another hoot, another gobble, then silence. A few minutes of silence got the best of the owl and it belted out again and was cut off by the roar of three different gobblers. I was pumped. I listened to the three gobblers battling vocally for five minutes before getting back in the truck and heading down the dirt road a couple of miles to another spot. As I opened the truck door it was as if I'd never left the first spot. Three gobblers were vocally abusing each other as if they were in a battle to be heard over each other. I cranked up and headed back home. As I pulled into the driveway the sun was just starting to peek over the horizon. I walked down to the boat and fired up the outboard in search of crappie. The fish didn't cooperate at all but I didn't seem to mind at all. It had already been a great day,,,,,

By the way Nutoy, that was a great read. Were you an author in another life? I felt like i was there seeing what you were.....   You could get a job writing script for some of those hunting show's, god knows they could use someone with talent and passion to write for them......

Rick, I've had a owl call work at high noon, but, not very often. It does seem to work much better before sunrise in my area.

My favorite way to scout is to go to selected places that birds seem to occupy each year and do absolutly nothing and let nature take its course. The birds around here get clobbered with crow and owl calls before the season opens. Once the season opens that can be the fastest way to make a bird shut up. If I can put a bird to bed the evening before I'll try to get close well before daylight and use a owl call one time to try and shock gobble him so I don't get too close and bump him off the roost. I've had them gobble more than an hour before daylight.

PS: I've had the best luck with the Primos Hoot Flute with both finger holes closed. It sooooo easy to use and on a quiet morning its tone seems to carry forever. I've had gobblers answer it from a mile away.

BTW Rick, hows your season going?

Sorry I didnt ansewer sooner, Ive been pretty busy.

Season going pretty good - put my decoy out last weekend started calling, I had 4 hens come over to it  and talked to each other for about 30-35 minutes it was really cool wathing them and listening to the sounds they make up close. I kept thinking a gobbler is going to come along any minute but nope he never came.

Here the owl works best in the late evening and a crow just before sunrise. Right now the birds are very quiet and not gobbeling. I went to a nice new place today to give it a look see> I yelped a few times then went quiet, wait about 20-30 minutes and hit it again.. Getting late so i start to leave, got in the truck and started down the road, maybe sixty yards and son of a gun---- Big ole tom coming straight at me in the direction i was calling from. That bird was easy 25+ on the hoof and my buddy who was with swears it had a 12 inche beard. So we stop the truck quick and that tom flew off before i could get a shell in my gun. I'll go back in a couple of day's and see if i cant get him....

Two days ago i had a similar situation as Rick. Had three hens out in a field and no tom's to shoot.

Today i saw three toms in different areas, all tooo far to shoot, but watched them and enjoyed doing that.

I really regretted taking my shotgun, so switching to my muzzleloader next hunt. All our birds are not responding to any yelps or decoys, just hanging out and feeding.  I figure in a couple of weeks they should start responding to yelps.

I   threaten to use a rifle, but am scared of the price i'd pay for that. Man, the DNR officers crawl the woods during turkey season.

It's funny, you cant use a rifle here unless it's a muzzleloader.

The tom's should start to gobble in a week or so and respond to call's vocally. I really love sitting in the wood's during spring!!!! Its not hotand very few insect's to bother ya. There's something about seeing that sun creep up over the horizen, and having small birds and squirrels moving about inches from you that is awesome, ole mother nature at her finest. Unless your a hunter, most people cant even imagine the grandure. I guess it's a combo of sounds and smells that awaken something deep inside that makes me feel alive, and i know those that read our post's here can relate. I feel sympathy for the corporate type's that have no clue as to how great the outdoors are and have never experienced that feeling of peace and the excitement of anticipation.

Even though i'm at work and just getting back from a sick call, thinking about it makes me feel better and even smile.

Some states such as Virginia allow you to use a rifle during the fall turkey season.

We can use shotgun, rimfire,or centerfire on the wma I hunnt on most of the other wma's it shotgun or rimfire.

Man I keep getting so close to these damn birds yesterday I was out and I had the 22 mag, I saw a big tom about 300 yards away I snuck in to about 60 yards sat down rested my elbows on my knees - had him in my crosshares he looks up the other direction and he had a few cowbirds next to him  when they flew away he took off into the brush. I was thinking man I know he didnt see me, what happened? I look through the scope past where he was there was three people taking a damn bike ride through the area I was hunting in. :angrier2

I waited untill the people came down to where I was and walked up to them - I wanted to yell at them and tell them they werent supposed to be out here when theres any hunting seasons going on but when the  first guy saw my face he knew what they did and asked we didnt just ruin your hunt did we? I said yeah Ive been stalking that bird for about 45 mins they all said sorry and I couldnt yell turns out they were scouting for next season and just wanted to be in the woods like I did. What can you do? I took monday off for my wifes birthday maybe Ill go out for a few hours before the family wakes up.

Thats to bad.Hopefully you have better luck next time.At least it was not done on purpose. What I hated the most hunting in the spring for turkeys down in Virginia was when I was calling, people would try to sneak between me and the turkey I was calling in so they could get a shot first.Very frustrating.
