Thought I'd share with y'all my hunt this morning.

The 5:15am alarm clock didn't even get a chance to buzz this morning. I was up at 5:00am and had the coffee pot going just a few minutes later. I walked outside with my first cup and sat on the porch steps with a frown on my face as the 20 mph wind was pushing whitecaps into our cove. This is about right I thought to myself. I filled my thermos and jumped in the ol ford and fired up the powerstroke and sat there thinking "why are you going hunting when you know you probably won't even hear a gobbler much less see one". Something told me to go anyway beacause I surely didn't stand a chance hanging out in the yard all day. Off I go to one of the spots where I had heard three gobblers a week ago while scouting. It was still 45 minutes before any hint of daylight so I went thru all my stuff again for the 20th time since yesterday. The spot I chose was a large powerline right of way with a series of hardwood bottoms stretching over a couple of miles. I think the wind had even picked up a notch or two cause the trees were really swaying as the horizon was starting to get that dim glow. I decided I wasn't going to lug a bunch of stuff today so I grabbed a couple mouth calls and a box call and headed down the right of way to the first bottom about 1/4 mile away. The further down the botton I got the less the wind seemed to blow. It's now light enough to see my way with ease but the inner woods still had that heavy shadowed look. I turned and followed a creek into the woods for 100 yds or so and came to a nice open spot. This 'll do I thought. I sat next to a big white oak tree and put on my face mask and gloves. As I reached for my favorite call I felt a light drizzle hitting me in the face. Well aint this just lovely. By the time I put the call in my mouth it was like someone hit a light switch, The wind quit blowing, the drizzle stopped and you could have heard a leaf fall from 50 yards. No birds were chirping. Nothing was stirring. It was almost scary quiet. I thought nows my chance so I eased out a few soft yelps. Nothing. I then did something I usually don't do but what the heck. I hit the call with a series of hard cuts followed by a few loud yelps and the sky erupted almost directly over my head. Two gobbler cut loose not 30 yards away but directly behind me. I wasn't about to move a muscle. Within two minutes I hear the flapping of wings and the two gobblers split the tree I was sitting against, one on each side. Talk about a beautiful sight. They both hit the ground not 10 yards in front of me and instantly went into full strut. One was a jake and the other was small two year old. I don't shoot jakes and decided I wasn't going to shoot the two year old so I figured I may as well enjoy the show and have a little fun. They struted, spitted and drummed all around me for 15 minutes. They finally got bored with the sweet thing that was hiding and started to leave. When they got about 50 yards away I let out a couple soft yelps. They spun around and ran back to me and put on another 15 minute show. When they went to leave this time I let them go on their way. I'd call that a good hunt.

Just goes to show you no matter how bad a day you think your going to have sometimes you'll be surprised.

Just been real busy. I'm trying to get everything caught up before bear season and warm weather so I can get some camping in. I've stopped in and read some to try and keep up with everyone.

Hey Nutoy, did you score today? I didn't see you come by where I was planting, so I figured you might have done something. I got all my stuff planted. Just need some rain now.

I havn't pulled the trigger,,,,, yet. I've been having a blast just about every morning. The only problem is, if you want to call it that, is the only birds I've been getting to play have been jakes and two year olds. This year there has been more hunting pressure on the birds then I have every seen before. I think the older birds are just doing what any older, wiser critter does, avoid the hunters. Most of the hunters are getting discouraged so it won't be long until the pressure dies down and the older birds will get vocal again.

Good to hear you got everything planted. It's supposed to start raining tonight and tomorrow.
