Hey guys,
I've never been after hogs before but will be in hog country this next month for business and figured I would give it a whirl. Lets hear some recommendations for cartridge size. I just might have to go out and buy a new toy.
Also, what ranges can I expect to be shooting at, is it worth using a scope?

| Darn, I guess all the answers you want, are dependant on where you are hunting. I normally am set up for shots no closer than 50 yards, and no further than 100yards. I use a scope because the hogs normally are working early in the morning or just before dark, and it is better in limited light, but a scope doesn't guarantee anything. I have used a number of centerfire cartridges, but have come to like the 7mm/08 Remington as the best all around rifle. But it doesn't kill any better than the .308, 30-06, .280, 7mm Mag, 30-30 or any of the many others. I normally aim right below the ear, and about an inch behind it. Good Luck!

I want to add to Chicks reply and say that if in heavy cover i find that open sights work best for quick or snap shots, at least for me. As i stated in your other post, find out what the locals recommend.
Chick made some very good suggestions and i guess it really comes down to comfort for you. I try to purchase firearms that can serve more than one purpose.

I love my .44 mag carbine. Im good out to about 125 yards but I hardly see anything farther than that where I hunt.
I put a red dot scope on it. Its short and light and does the job I need it to.

Accuracy is all that really matters, just make sure it is sighted in good. I have hunted them with just about everything. I did like hunting them with a crossbow on guam. I know that they are legal in Texas, but not here in Louisiana unless you have a handicap or as old as most of the forum members.

| hi there here in new zealand, i hunt with 6 dogs we just use a kinfe to kill our hogs but sum times you get a hot head hog and the dogs will bail them so we have to shoot them for that we use a 7.62x39 cal in a single shot rossi the rounds are cheap an most shots are under 30ft heaps of power .other guns i have used that work fine are 44mag, 303 brit, 308 ,3030, 30.06 is to much gun for what we need with dogs

I was sending a reply to ya and didnt get to finish it yesterday, so, welcome to boarmasters.
On the 7.62x39, i recently aquired a SKS. I ordered a new stock for it and cant wait to take it to the range, then hog hunting. I do enjoy using my 44 mag as well, but my favorite to date is my marlin, chambered in 35 rem.

| I had an SKS, but maybe I have been spoiled by the M14, Mini 14 and the AR15. I found the SKS to be inaccurate and loose feeling, when fired. Plus, it had all the craftsmanship that was found in a dime store toy department. I guess the 7.62X39 round would be good in another rifle. | in a bolt action or hammer action the 7.62x39 are hard to beat and the hitting power is great ,7.62x39 in ak47 you b lucky to hit a barn , utubes got sum good tests on 7.62x39 vs 223

| I have shot 95% at 600 yards with an AR15, in the prone position with the aperature sights. I don't think there is a AR or SKS out there that can hang with that. Of course, I was shooting 80gr Match King bullets, loaded to match the rifle, that must be fired single shot, as they were too long to fit the magazine.

good on ya ,you must be a good shot 80gr is a bit light to be shooting hogs ,wooldnt like to shoot a big boar at 600yards with a 80gr round but in saying that i have kill bulls at 40yards with a 22 cal rimfire it all comes down to shot placement  most deer we shoot with 7.62x39 is under 100yards and hogs under 40feet

| I got a new toy last year its a Saiga rifle an AK variant in .308 its acurate and if you miss( like I did ) you can empty it and cut down small trees
