Yes it is why the sad face. I was hoping for a multi use home protection and back up hunting.  In the future  may go with a revolver but I will have a .remmington 270 and the .40 as back up "just in case" I have heard to many bad stoies. Also picked up a cross bow cheap from someone. It is a Barnett veloci-speed glass thats all I know,oh and at 40' it goes in my target 8.5''

Heck, if you have a rifle, you don't need a pistol. I thought you just wanted to hunt with a pistol.

Well I do but I have not been hearing the best on them that it is better with a rifle and have a pistol as back up for anything that could happen. So in your opinion what is better a .270 or 30-06 I have never used either and would like a good al around gun.

If I had to rely on ejust one rifle, of all calibers available, I would be hard pressed not to choose the 30-06. Besides being enough rifle for any game in North America, ammunition is available anywhere you go. Plus, there are some western states that use to require 7mm or larger for Elk. 7mm is .284, which made a .270 illegal to use in their state. If you already have a .270, I would use it. There is certainly nothing wrong with it.

Well actualy I don't have eigther my bro in law has all the guns, all i have is a .22 savage rifle and my new .40cal hand gun I just picked up. I was just going to use his out hunting but was wandering for myself when I go to buy my own.  They pretty much are all the same right? Besides the scope and grain size but function wise I don't have to go top of the line? I have heard 30-06 is they way so that is what I will get. It now comes up to me saving my money.

Thanks Boarmaster.... Hogwild, i own a .40 S&W and it is a great gun for up close and personal, however not much on long range. Out over 25 yards it falls away quick. For longer ranges i prefer a revolver. Much more accurate and you dont lose power because of the gas operation of automatics, the way they work. I prefer lever actions, bolt or pumps on long guns.

Well that is good to know. I like the .357 Mag. but have also been told that the .44mag is better. I don't want to be talked into a more expencive or more powerful gun than I need. What is your thoughts or would you choose a completly different revolver?

I love my .44 mag, hands down. I have a Ruger super redhawk. Stainless with a 7.5 barrel. The redhawk is double action and the black hawk single, both of which will do the job. On that  it's a matter of preference. The .44 mag will reach out there a ways and the weight and lenght of the pistol help absorb recoil and make it much more comfortable to shoot. I use Hornady ammo as much as possible, at least in my pistols and rifles. Shot guns i use pretty much anything with the only exception being when i turkey hunt and i use 3 inch mag Fiocchi #5.

As Chick and i have stated, it becomes a matter of choice, and what he or i use works for us. Weapons in my opinion fit the person, and comfort while shooting and hunting are the priority.

The 500 S&W is a great gun, but very expensive to shoot, about 2.49 a shell, so that gun is a no go for me as it too expensive to play with.

The Ruger comes with scope rings in the box, so you would only need to purchase a scope. That saves some cash, which is good.

I would also consider a .45 long colt, S&W, however ammo is pricey there, although the pistol is a 150.. dollars or so cheaper, so you save on the weapon but pay more for ammo. If you check around for ballistic performance, you might come up with a suitable or alternative round to these i mentioned.

Well I got the 40 cal s&w a month ago and tonight was the first time I got to shoot it. I went with my wife to show her gun safety and how to shoot but she was not into it. To much of a kick and to powerful for her. But my point was I don't know what I was doing wrong but I could not seem to hit the target in the orange spot. Was I aiming wrong? How do you aim ? It seemed as if all my shots were low by 3'' or so at 20' was I holding it wrong or do I need new sights, or could it be I don't know how to aim a pistol? P.S. the wife liked my 22 rifle so thinking about a 22 hand gun for her what is the take on that? How do you aim a pistol?

line up the three dots on your sights, they need to be in a row and level, then you should be able to hit your target
