In my moultrie game cameras I use the UB5-6S battery. They lasted about 1 year and now they won't keep a charge. They have a 5AH rating. Could I use a 6 volt that has a 12AH rating and do you think that it will hold up better in the cold? I have used normal 6 volts and they're lucky if they last 1 night especially if it's cold. I know most of you are in the warmer climates and don't have that problem. I can not use a solar charger, the bear like to play with them.

as a suggestion, a solar charger might work if you extend your charger leads and place the panel higher in the tree. Run the leads through pvc pipe, 1/4 inch in diameter and use a elbow and a shorter peice of pipe to the back of you camera. somewhere on the forum is pics of folks using a a ammo can to house the camera. you can attach electrical pvc to the can and use large hose clamps like the hvac guys use to attach the pipe to the tree.
It might work

wyo, I know it doesn't get anywhere near as cold here as it does in your neck of the woods but I do notice my game cam batteries don't last as long during colder periods.
I have some 6v - 6.5 AH batteries and they hold up much better than the 5 AH batteries.
I won't waste my time with anything under a 5 AH battery. The wife found a deal on some rechargeable 6v's, they are 4.5 AH. They wouldn't last but a few days to a week, even in warm temps.
I ended up duct taping two together, wired them parallel and used them in corn feeders.
I know a couple of folks who use those small 6v motorcycle batteries on their game cams. They tell me they can get months out of a fully charged one.

I put all of my cameras in ammo cans. That was a hard lesson learned. I did try the solar panel like you mentioned. They left teeth marks all over the pvc and when they reached the solar panel. It ended up being a chew toy for the bear. I don't think they should be able to climb a tree , that's down right cheating.LOL

| I'm going to order a 12ah battery. I talked to the company and they said it will last longer and hold up better. We'll see. Once I get them I'll let ya know how they do.

| I bought a Rhino 6volt 12ah battery, boy what a difference! I had to made a modification to the camera. I checked my camera today and after being set for 17 days, 71 pictures, and still had a full charge.

I have a 14.5 AH rechargeable battery, that came off one of those little battery powered cars the kids ride. It lasts a while. I did some research a while back, and I found that the Energizer Alkaline 6v is suppose to be about 25 AH, but it is abour $6.50 a pop. The rechargeable batteries will not last as long, if allowed to discharge too much. If you have a solar panel (that the wildlife won't destroy), the 6V batteries should last about 5 years, according to the battery place in town. I am using the 12V / 8AH battery on my trail cam, and they are about 2 years old. The battery issue is one of the things that led me to the ScoutGuard 550 (SG550) Trail cam. It operates off of AA Batteries, and chasingame.com tests showed the 8 AA batteries would last up to 5000 pictures!

I also found some of the 6 volt rechargeable batteries that Wal Mart put on close out, for $1 each. I bought several. They are only 4 amp hour though. The smaller 6 volt batteries with the spade connections are 4.5 amp hour. The higher the rating, the longer they will last. It sure appears like yall have a problem with the bears. If you can put a solar charger on them, the batteries will last a lot longer. What kills them is the continual total discharge. The double whammy on this is when your trail cams start operating on low voltage, it can screw things up, in the software. By the way, my Scout Guard 550 operated from September to the last day of the season, on one set of AA batteries, and the battery meter still shows a full charge. I probably got about 1200 pictures on that. This camera is amazing.

Were did you get the battery from and what modifications did you make?
I ordered it off of ebay. It was to large to fit in the camera so I drilled a hole thru the back of the camera. I fed small wires thru the hole and attached alligator clips to use on the new battery. I'm using 50cal ammo cans bolted to trees. There is enough room in the can for both.

| I hunt on public land so I also put an eye bolt thru the handle side of the can. I then rap a chain around the tree and lock it to the eye bolt. I don't want Johnny Sneakums to get it.
