Go get some hogs!! I like to answer questions on an individual basis, so post a question any time you need help. Good descriptions and pictures help a lot, but don't feel like you have too. Every situation in hog hunting and trapping is unique to area and circumstance, so ask for help if you need it.

Hello all, I'm a complete noob to hog hunting but it looks like fun. I live in No. Cal and plan on some 'hikes with a gun' anyway. I understand public land hunting is very low odds here. I am planning on using a 223 or 22-250 with neck/head shots under 100 yds. Any good diagrams on this anatomy?

I had to re think this one. The calibers are pretty small for neck and head shots. If that's what your used too and will use, I would put it right behind the ear. That puts you close to the brain and c-spine. Be careful with the smaller calibers; they are accurate, but a hog is pretty resiliant. The fat armour goes up the neck and can close easy keeping the blood trail to a minimum if they don't drop in thier tracks. Personally I like to shoot them in the neck with my .270 if the angle is right. If your an expert marksman, put it behind the ear. If not, then go for the heart, low and more toward the shoulder than a deer. I would consider bumping up the caliber though. Not that bullets bounce off of them like the rumors you hear, but if you only get a few hunts in; don't chance it. Lay em down and fire the pit!
