I live in southeast Ohio. I hunt fereal hogs in Gallia County and this summer is my first season to hunt them. My question is, How do there habbits change in cold weather such as wallowing or nocturnal feeding? if any one can help that would be great!

Welcome to the forum Jassen.
A hogs life revolves around it's stomach. It will be where the food source is.
As for nocturnal feeding,,, hunting pressure will send them nocturnal faster then anything.
Good luck on your new addiction.

thanks for the response, and yes hunting hogs is an addiction but I love it! One thing we have had to overcome is the hogs are "skittish" because there is so much pressure on them. We have had to bait them for a month to get some good hits on our spot.

Glad to hear there are hog hunters in Ohio! I'll be doing seminar at the World Predator and Hunting Expo in Ohio in March of 2010.
spread the word to all the hog hunters.

In my neck of the woods there are quite a few hog hunters. I mostly hunt feral hogs in gallia count ohio. just north of me in vinton county a boar ranch has let a lot of russians loose into the wild, Its hard to get permission to hunt on private property up there because most of the landowners are avid hunters, but I'm crossing my fingers for a good break. See ya in Columbus in March 2010!

looking forward to it, be sure to come up and say hey! If I'm talking to someone which I usually am, just say hey anyway.
There will be a lot of good speakers there. I've hunted with many of them.

Jassen,
I also live in Ohio (Cincinnati), and really enjoy hog hunting, I understand that Ohio has a very small population of boar, in Gallia is there a good size population and do they concentrate on private land or public? Thanks,

Hey nice to meet ya,
Gallia has a small population, The area they concentrate in is called Symmes Creek near Patriot, Ohio. Most of this is state land called Wayne National Forrest. They are under a lot of hunting pressure there. Most hogs are harvested on private land. To hunt the state land I will definately use a dog. I am getting ready to start a baitspot up in Vinton Count near the Richland Furnace area. There are a lot of russians that were set free from a boar ranch bout 10 years ago. They have a healthy population there. Richland is state land as well.

That sounds great, as much as I am against releasing the hogs, it is nice to have a potential opportunity to hunt thme in Ohio. Good luck with the hunt I look forward to seeing some pictures when you get one.

Don't worry about releasing them. They are coming to the woods near you, soon.

| I have seen the ODNR map that shows Wild boar sightings and there are small pockets near me but I have not heard of any large groups being seen anywhere close.
