Well after baiting for the past month we got a pic of a southern ohio feral hog. There is a small population in Gallia county. Hopefully we will harvest a nice boar soon, this is a sow.

That log behind her we poured molasses and sorghum on it and you can see the bite marks. We have been using sourmash and some of that sour apple attractant from boarmasters.com and some "Boar Essence" urine from boarmasters.com as well. She is the only hog on our trail cam after a week of putting it up. We are going to wait and see if she draws some more hogs in.

heres our baitspot by day, Southern Ohio is lies in the foothills of the Appalachians, the country side is pretty brushy this time of year.

I would concentrate on her and forget about the boar. Boars may or may not be a stronger tasteing meat, but I have found that the sows are ALWAYS good. The bigger the boar, the more likely he is to be strong tasting. The more Russian (Eurasian) Boar blood in him, the less cahnce of being strong flavored. While more domestic hog influence will make the boars stronger. Again, the sow is always good.

Good luck!

Should we wait to kill some pigs until we get a decent size group in there? Thats the only one at that property we know of.

She sure is a healthy looking hog. If you ask about killing the pigs anywhere else you'd probably hear "KILL EM ALL". I am a little different when it comes to hogs. I like having them around but they do need to be managed or they WILL get out of control quick. There is a fine line between a managable herd and out of control.

I agree, we are not looking to make them extinct. The area they are in, there isnt much for them to destroy except for a few gardens. It is mostly woods ands brush down there. We want to enjoy hunting them for a while.

by the time you see just 1 hog, it is already too late to stop the invasion. Kill everyone you see there will be more if there is not already. If there are no others close by she will be gone soon anyway.

she'll be good eatin'!

Trying to manage them, is a job in itself. They are smart, when it comes to survival. I like a few hogs around, but they are like rabbits, once they get going. 2 1/2 litters a year, and the first thing you know, you are over run.

I don't get on here as often as I once did, but I do try to get on 2-3 times a week. You're welcome.

Here today and gone tomorrow. You never know when your dealing with a few that wondered in. Have you tried to track them out to a main trail. Makes me wonder why they are just showing up.. so many variables at this point. Seems to me that they are healthy looking. Could be deer season has pushed them your way, maybe.. or anything. Keep us posted with any new clues.

Where there's one there's more. Don't hesitate to take the first one you see.. boar or sow.. even a small one is good split down the middle on the fire.
