It's either a boar or a barrow.

I have a friend that used to catch lots of pigs, he would castrate every one he caught and turn them lose.??????????  My purpose in catching hogs is to make them extinct.  I have lots of other peoples experience by helping them in trapping hogs.  Here is the cardinal rule.  The larger the trap the more you catch and educate fewer hogs.  An uncle of mine had a trap that was about two acres with a catch pen in the only corner of the trap. Small traps only propagate hogs by making the ones that do not get caught smarter.  TREV

There is some truth in what you say, but realize most people do not have 2 acres to build a trap, or the money to build it that big. So, they use portable traps, or build a permanent trap, whatever size they can.

Here in southern Ohio a few hundred Russian boar escaped from a hunting ranch and some of the males were found to be castrated by the ranch owner. I guess to make the meat tastier.

Of course, the males are castrated for several reasons. One, the meat does taste better. Two, the barrow (castrated male hog), will put on more weight, and do it faster. Three, to sterilize it, so it cannot propogate. The cutting and release, of captured males is a common practice.
